भारतवर्ष में ज्ञान-विज्ञान,साहित्य, शस्त्र,शास्त्र ऐसे ही अनेक विधाओं के महान ज्ञाताओं ने जन्म लिया है। ऐसे ही ज्ञानी थे आचार्य सुश्रुत। प्राचीन काल के अन्य ऋषियों की तरह ही इनके भी साक्ष्य नहीं मिलते। इसके अनेक कारण रहे है किन्तु फिर भी कोई हीरा कोयले की खान में दबा रहे वो अपनी चमक बिखेर देता है।  ऐसे ही एक कोहिनूर हीरे थे आचार्य सुश्रुत।

गुप्त काल के एक प्रसिद्ध भारतीय चिकित्सक सुश्रुत ने शल्य चिकित्सा पर नवीन अध्यायों के साथ आयुर्वेदिक चिकित्सा की सभी प्रमुख अवधारणाओं पर एक संस्कृत पाठ संहिता लिखी। स्वर्ण युग के अन्य विद्वानों ने दस के आधार के साथ पहली भारतीय अंक प्रणाली बनाने में मदद की।  सुश्रुत उन महान आयुर्वेदाचार्यों में से एक है जिन्होंने इस दुनिया को शल्य चिकित्सा से अवगत कराया।आज से 2500 साल पहले प्लास्टिक सर्जरी  की थी इसलिए आचार्य सुश्रत को शल्य चिकित्सा का जनक कहा जाता है। साथ ही  वे आयुर्वेद के महान ग्रन्थ सुश्रुत सहिंता के रचियता है। शल्य चिकित्सा के पितामह आचार्य सुश्रुत का  जन्म काशी  में हुआ था। सुश्रुत संहिता में सुश्रुत को विश्वामित्र का पुत्र कहा गया है विश्वामित्र से कौन से विश्वामित्र अभिप्रेत है ,यह स्पष्ट नहीं। सुश्रुत के नाम पर आयुर्वेद भी प्रसिद्द है सुश्रुत सहिंता में शल्य चिकित्सा  के विभिन्न पहलुओं को विस्तार से समझाया गया है। शल्य क्रिया के लिए १२५ तरह के उपकरणों  का प्रयोग करते थे  . ये उपकरण शल्य क्रिया की जटिलता को देखते हुए खोजे गए थे।  इन उपकरणों में विशेष प्रकार के चाकू ,सुइया ,चिमटियां आदि है। 

सुश्रुत ने 300  प्रकार की ऑपरेशन प्रक्रियाओं की खोज की। सुश्रुत  ने कॉस्मेटिक सर्जरी में विशेष निपुणता हासिल करली थी।  सुश्रुत  नेत्र शल्य चिकित्सा भी करते थे। सुश्रुतसंहिता में मोतियाबिंद के ऑपरेशन करने  की विधि को  विस्तार  से बताया गया है। उन्हें शल्य क्रिया द्वारा प्रसव कराने का भी ज्ञान था।
